United States Bartenders’ Guild Announces its Tales of the Cocktail® Hand-Shaken Daiquiri Competition Sponsored by BACARDI® Rum and in the Mix Magazine

First Place Judges’ Choice Winner Christopher Sinclair of Sacramento Advances to World Cocktail Competition in Queenstown, New Zealand

NEW ORLEANS, July 31, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Tales of the Cocktail hosted the United States Bartenders’ Guild (USBG) Hand-Shaken Daiquiri Competition on Fri., July 27 in New Orleans, challenging 12 of the best bartenders from across the country to create their own version of a hand-shaken Daiquiri recipe. Sponsored by BACARDI rum and in the Mix Magazine, the event urged these talented bartenders to shake things up and put a new spin on the classic cocktail created with BACARDI rum in 1898.


The challenge was presented to finalists representing several different USBG chapters from cities including San Diego, Denver, Austin, Atlanta and Tampa.

Hand-Shaken Daiquiri Competition Winners:

1st Place Judges’ Choice –Christopher Sinclair from Sacramento created the “Hot Havana Nostalgia”

1st Place People’s Choice –Travis Tober from Austin created the “Ode to Hemingway”

As the first place Judges’ Choice champion, Chris Sinclair of Sacramento received a one-of-a-kind trophy, along with a check for $1,500. “Ode to Hemingway” was praised for its dynamic flavor and loyalty to true Daiquiri form.

The People’s Choice winner, Travis Tober, received the majority vote of the 500 attendees at the competition and a one-of-a-kind trophy to commemorate the win. Tober’s cocktail, “Ode to Hemingway,” was applauded for its unique presentation — the Hemingway-inspired cocktail was perfectly paired with key lime juice, homemade ginger and peppercorn syrup mixed with cherry bitters to create an ultimate flavor experience.

“The cocktails were astoundingly phenomenal,” said Country Roads writer and New Orleans local, Brenda Maitland. “They were able to infuse the spirits and botanicals that allowed the roots of the hand-shaken Daiquiri flavor profile to shine.”

This year’s finalists representing their respective USBG chapters and their cocktails include:

  • Julio Cabrera from Miami – Maduro

  • Jason Patz from Denver– Le Grand Daiquiri
  • Ryan Pines from Tampa Bay – La Mezcia
  • Brian Prugalidad from San Diego – Daft Jack
  • Adam Robinson from Oregon – Rum Club Daiquiri
  • Rhachel Shaw from Northern California – Weekend In Ibiza
  • Christopher Sinclair from Northern California – Hot Havana Nostalgia
  • Travis Tober from Austin – Ode to Hemingway

Dan Dunn, a.k.a. “The Imbiber,” served as the evening’s host. The panel of judges featured some of the foremost authorities on cocktails. Judges included Tales of the Cocktail founder Ann Tuennerman, USBG National President David Nepove, BACARDI Rum Brand Master Juan Coronado, winner of the 2012 Bacardi Global Legacy Cocktail Competition Shingo Gokan and Managing Editor of in the Mix magazine Mike Raven.

Bartenders were judged according to the following criteria: technical skills and presentation; appearance; aroma; balance of flavors; taste; creativity; and the overall appeal of character. All participants were required to use rum as the base spirit and BACARDI Superior Rum, the original, mixable light-bodied clear rum was preferred. A preliminary group of judges, consisting of members from USBG National and Tales of the Cocktail, voted on the best qualifying round recipes for each chapter.
