Year Up Graduates & Staff to Attend Leading IT Event Focused on Cloud Computing, Virtualization Security & More; Travel Made Possible by Southwest Airlines
SAN FRANCISCO, May 8, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Year Up announced today that six graduates and four staff members from its Bay Area and Puget Sound sites will attend Interop Las Vegas, the leading comprehensive, independent business technology event. UBM TechWeb, Interop’s parent company, will fund the four-day event experience for ten Year Up individuals through its sponsorship (a grant valued at over $15,000), which includes conferences passes, Expo show floor access, and accommodations. Interop Las Vegas will take place May 6-10 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. For more information around Year Up’s participation at Interop, visit: http://www.interop.com/lasvegas/about/support-las-vegas-public-schools.php. The sponsorship is only a single example of the support and commitment that UBM — a global live media and B2B communications, marketing service and data provider — has made to Year Up. Year Up is grateful to UBM for their donations, volunteers and willingness to share their expertise. In addition to the sponsorship by UBM TechWeb’s Interop, travel to Las Vegas is made possible by Southwest Airlines, which in 2011 awarded Year Up Bay Area with 40 Southwest round trip tickets through its Showing LUV to our Communities for 40 Years Contest. “The goal of Year Up is to create opportunities for our students to expand their world and knowledge base. This would not be possible without the support of community leaders such as UBM TechWeb’s Interop and Southwest Airlines, companies that share our vision of closing the Opportunity Divide,” said Jay Banfield, Year Up Bay Area’s Founding Executive Director. “Interop’s generous sponsorship is creating an opportunity for the attendees to have exposure, training and networking opportunities in the business technology arena that they wouldn’t otherwise have.” “Interop is proud to partner with Year Up and provide a unique opportunity for graduate students to participate in and experience an event in their chosen field,” said Jennifer Jessup, Interop General Manager. “We view our partnership as an investment in the future technology workforce. It is Interop’s privilege to participate in the education of graduate students poised to become the next generation of IT leaders.” Lauded by President Barack Obama for its proven, innovative approach, Year Up is a national nonprofit organization that provides IT career training to young adults disconnected from the economic mainstream and helps them secure internships with top US companies. Its scalable model prepares students for the workforce using a unique combination of technical and professional instruction, college credits, an educational stipend and corporate internships. Successful completion of the intensive, one-year program enables graduates to move into full-time employment and higher education. Research independently conducted by Economic Mobility Corporation indicates that students who complete the Year Up program have access to higher quality jobs and earn up to 30 percent more than those who did not.
