SAN FRANCISCO, May 31, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) today announced that 10 students in its northern and central California service area have been awarded full-ride scholarships of up to $30,000 per year to complete their college degrees. The awards are part of PG&E’s $1 million Bright Minds Scholarship Program, which helps cover higher education expenses for selected high school seniors, community college and “non-traditional” students.

The 10 students were among more than 8,000 applicants. More than 90 program finalists will receive $2,500 towards their college costs.

The PG&E Bright Minds scholarships were awarded based on a combined demonstration of community leadership, personal triumph, financial need and academic achievement. The top 10 recipients are:

  • Julian Alvarez, a U.S. veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and current student at Los Positas Junior College, Livermore, Calif. Julian plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in communications at a four-year university.
  • Raymond Chan, graduating senior at John F. Kennedy High School, Sacramento, Calif. Raymond plans to attend Stanford University to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering this fall.
  • Kara Davis, third-year student at Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park, Calif. Kara is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
  • Lisa English, third-year student at California State University, Bakersfield. Lisa is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in environmental resources.
  • Craig Martineau, graduating senior at Templeton High School, Templeton, Calif. Craig plans to attend the University of California, Los Angeles to pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology this fall.
  • Erica McCray, third-year student at Pacific Union College, Angwin, Calif. Erica is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in social work.
  • Marisa Monier, third-year student at the University of California, Berkeley. Marisa is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in peace and conflict studies.
  • Nicholas Raber, graduating senior at Alameda High School, Alameda, Calif. Nicholas plans to attend the University of California, Berkeley to pursue a bachelor’s degree in cognitive science this fall.
  • Song Vang, fifth-year student at the California State University, Fresno. Song is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in deaf education and linguistics.
  • Hunter Wright, graduating senior at Edison High School, Fresno, Calif. Hunter plans to attend the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Fla., to pursue a degree in English this fall.

Awarded scholarship funds will help students pay for university tuition, books and supplies, and room and board. High school students will receive renewable full-ride scholarships of up to $30,000 for five years. “Non-traditional” students currently attending post-secondary schools will receive up to $30,000 per year until a certificate, associate’s or bachelor’s degree is earned. Scholarship Management Services served as PG&E’s facilitator for its Bright Minds Program and selected the scholarship recipients.

“PG&E’s Bright Minds Program is unique in that it offers scholarships to high school students as well as community college and ‘non-traditional’ students,” said Barb Weber, vice president of Scholarship Management Services. “Too often, college students in their third, fourth or fifth years face the biggest financial challenges and, unfortunately, have to prolong or postpone their education. PG&E’s Bright Minds scholarship will help bridge the financial gap for these students to complete their education goals.”

In addition to the scholarship opportunities through the PG&E Bright Minds Program, a wide variety of scholarships were also offered through PG&E’s Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). This year, PG&E’s 10 ERGs will award $302,000 in scholarships to 163 college-bound students from Northern and Central California. Within the past decade, PG&E’s ERGs have provided over $2.5 million in scholarships to over a thousand students in diverse communities. BOULDER, Colo., May 31, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Top transportation officials from across the country, including Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez, headlined the launch of a new initiative to bring protected bikeways to six U.S. cities at a national kickoff event today in Chicago. The Green Lane Project (www.greenlaneproject.org), created by the national bicycling nonprofit Bikes Belong Foundation (www.bikesbelong.org), is working with Austin, Chicago, Memphis, Portland, Ore., San Francisco and Washington, D.C., to support each city’s development of world-class bicycling networks over the next two years. Mendez and Bikes Belong introduced the program and announced initial plans at the event.

“We are seeing an explosion of interest in making bicycling stress-free on busy city streets,” said Martha Roskowski, Green Lane Project director for Bikes Belong. “The selected cities have ambitious goals and a vision for bicycling supported by their elected officials and communities. They are poised to get projects on the ground quickly and will serve as excellent examples for other interested cities.”

Green lanes are dedicated, inviting spaces for people on bikes in the roadway, protected by curbs, planters, posts or parked cars. The goal of the Green Lane Project is to support the selected cities in their efforts to develop and install these kinds of facilities. Recent studies have demonstrated their benefits nationwide. In Washington, D.C., bicycle volume tripled after protected bikeways were installed. In Portland, Ore., more than 70 percent of survey respondents said bicycling is easier and safer with these dedicated lanes, while motorists said the facilities did not make driving any slower or less convenient.

“Green lanes benefit everyone who uses city streets, not just people on bicycles,” continued Roskowski. “With these facilities, people in cars and on foot know where to expect bicycles. More people on bikes eases congestion. When people ride bikes, they are healthier, and they save money.”

Green Lane Project plan highlights for the six focus cities:

Austin, Texas, celebrated the opening of a green lane project in April, and has several more projects under development. The city is tackling major connections in a revitalizing downtown area. The presence of the state capitol, a major university and a thriving music scene make it a diverse and dynamic city that sees bicycling as a way to attract top-tier businesses and ease congestion.

Chicago is leading the way with a bold commitment by Mayor Rahm Emanuel to build 100 miles of new green lanes during his four-year term. These projects will significantly transform city streets and provide a model for rapid implementation. Work on several new projects began in May and will continue through the summer.

Memphis, Tenn., installed 35 miles of bike lanes in the last two years and is planning two new significant green lanes in the upcoming year. New green lanes will connect a popular rail-trail with the city’s central park and help to revitalize businesses on the corridor. Mayor A.C. Wharton catalyzed this turnaround after Memphis was named one of the worst cities for riding by Bicycling magazine in 2008.

Portland, Ore., leads the nation in the development of neighborhood greenways and other innovative street designs. Its attention to detail for bicycle operations at intersections and other transition points is unmatched in the U.S.

San Francisco is quickly catching up after a three-year injunction stalled most bicycle-related improvements from 2007-2010. A new green lane in Golden Gate Park was recently completed and plans are underway for green lanes in a number of other corridors.

Washington, D.C., is a national showcase, with a steady stream of influential visitors. The city is now planning new projects near Union Station and in other areas. The red bikes of the Capital Bikeshare system are being used at least 6,000 times a day, building significant support for better places to ride.

The Project will provide updates on the progress in the six cities, best practices as they are developed, and links to other resources on their website at greenlaneproject.org. Other interested cities are invited to use the website to share their plans and progress on building green lanes.

Research summary: The 453 respondents to InformationWeek’s 2012 IT Spending Priorities Survey identify improving security and increasing server virtualization as their top two projects for 2012, with enterprise social media dead last. This reveals an obvious focus on operational concerns, sometimes at the expense of embracing transformative technologies.

Findings:

  • 55% of our survey respondents have improving security on their IT project lists for 2012; 24% say it’s one of their top two initiatives this year.
  • Just 13% will launch or upgrade an enterprise social networking platform, with only 2% identifying it as one of their top priorities for 2012.
  • Across all 12 IT projects examined in the report, IT pros say the primary source of funding will be through new budget allocations versus savings or reassigning funds.
  • 39% say their IT budgets will increase this year, 43% expect them to remain unchanged and 12% face budget cuts.
